CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Freshman pitcher Kelsey Stevens recorded her first perfect game as the No. 17 Stanford softball team blanked Virginia 4-0, Saturday, at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. The Cardinal improves to 12-3 overall, while the Cavaliers dropped to 6-7.

Stevens finished with 10 strikeouts and has now pitched 30.2 consecutive scoreless innings. She is 7-1 overall and has five shutouts on the year. Virginia's Melanie Mitchell took the loss, falling to 5-3.

Stanford registered a season high 15 hits in the game, led by sophomore Cassandra Roulund who was 3-for-3 with three RBI. Five other Cardinal players tallied two hits in the contest, including a career high for designated player Alyssa Lombardo.

A two-run single with the bases loaded by Roulund, scoring Leah White and Sarah Hassman, gave the Cardinal the lead in the bottom of the third inning.

Stanford tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth to push the lead to 3-0. With one out, Roulund singled to left centerfield. She advanced to second on a single by catcher Erin Ashby. Second baseman Tegan Schmidt brought her home with a single to left field.

The Cardinal scored its final run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Roulund in the bottom of the sixth, bringing home White.

 

 

Stanford wraps-up the tournament on Sunday, Feb. 24 with a double-header against No. 23 Florida State and Syracuse beginning at 11:30 a.m.
