STANFORD, Calif.--The Stanford softball team swept Cal State Northridge, 2-0, 4-0 today in the season opener at the Stanford Softball Complex. Stanford improves to 2-0 on the season while Northridge falls to 4-3.
Stanford shortstop Michelle Schneider hit a sacrifice fly to score freshman catcher Kellie Wiginton in the first inning to give the Cardinal a 1-0 advantage. Schneider scored on an error in the third inning to put Stanford up, 2-0. Schneider went 2-for-2 with one run scored and one RBI in the first game to lead the Cardinal. Junior pitcher Becky Blevins tossed a three hit shutout while striking out seven and walking only one.
Marcy Crouch's fourth inning double scored Michelle Schneider to give Stanford a 1-0 advantage in game two. Wiginton's double in the fifth inning scored Kobata to put Stanford up, 2-0. A 2-RBI single by Wiginton in the seventh inning scored Liz Quimby and Ramona Shelburne to seal the win for Stanford. In the second game, Wiginton went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one double. Crouch threw a two-hit shutout while striking out two and walking none.
Stanford will host San Jose State on Monday, Feb. 16. Game one of the doubleheader will start at noon.
