Week 12: #12 Kelley Birch

Kelley Birch

Kelley Birch

Kelley is a sophomore midfielder from Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. who has played in 20 games and made five starts for the Cardinal this season. She collected her first assist of the season against Oregon State two weeks ago, finding teammate Kelley O'Hara for the insurance goal.

Question of the Week: What is your favorite Stanford soccer memory?

"All of the road trips we go on are especially fun. Freshman year, we always have little things that the freshmen do that are really fun. This year we went to New York, which was nice for me since my brother lives in New York and I got so see him. Also, our rafting trips at the beginning of preseason are really fun trips. They help the team bond totally out of the setting of Stanford."

The Week That Was: Nevada and USC

"Going into the first game, I think a lot of us remembered last year and the feeling we had afterwards of losing. We knew that we had a great opportunity to win playing Nevada. They were a great team, but we came out with a lot of desire and fight to win, which helped us a lot. That brought us to Sunday's match, where we played USC. It was also a great game and a hard fight, but I think that our team just has a really strong desire to win. We know that we have the possibility, so when we go out there with the right mentality, we have the opportunity to do really well."

The Week That Is: Clemson

"I think we need to come out with the same mentality as we had last weekend in our next match. Any game could be your last game, so we just need to give it all we have. We've never really played Clemson, so we don't know exactly what to expect. We had played USC, so we knew kind of what to expect. If we go out there and play the soccer that we normally play, I think we will do really well. I think it's a huge advantage to be playing at home. I was so excited when I found out we were playing here. You have your home crowd there. You can sleep in your own bed. You're on your normal schedule. You don't have the time zone difference. We're going to be playing at 7:00 at night, which could be hard for them traveling from the east. Mainly, just having your home field and home routine is going to be a huge advantage for us."
