Stanford Ties ASU in Overtime, 2-2
TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona State soccer team (11-6-1,
5-2-1 Pac-10) came from behind to tie Stanford (10-7-1, 5-2-1
Pac-10), 2-2 in double overtime Friday at Sun Devil Soccer
Field.
The first goal was scored by Stanford's Tracye Lawyer with the
assist going to Jill Buxton in the 34th minute. Lawyer beat the
defender and shot the ball into the right corner of the goal.
Sun Devil sophomore midfielder Kim Wagner fed freshman
midfielder Antoinette Marjanovic at the 43:30 mark for ASU's
first goal. Marjanovic had a breakaway started by Wagner that
led to a one-on-one with the Cardinal goalkeeper.
The score was tied at halftime, but Stanford came out fired up
in the second half and scored after three minutes. Celina
DeLeon scored an unassisted goal in the 47th minute off of a
corner kick.
However, the Sun Devils would answer again as sophomore
defender Marianne Simmons connected with freshman forward
Jaclyn Clark in the 81st minute to tie the game. Simmons passed
a long ball to Clark who now leads all Sun Devils in goals with
10.
Both sudden-death overtime periods were scoreless. Stanford
outshot Arizona State 20-11. Sun Devil goalkeeper Erin Reinke
had nine saves, while the Cardinal goalkeeper stopped six
shots. ASU had 15 fouls compared Stanford's 13.
Stanford and Arizona State remain tied for second place in the
Pac-10.
The Cardinal wrap up the regular season on Sunday in Tucson against Arizona.
