Stanford Opens Conference Play at Home
Up Next: Stanford (4-5) opens Pac-10 play with a pair of
home matches this weekend ... The Cardinal will face USC
(9-1-1)on Friday, Oct. 10 at 4 pm ... USC has not defeated the
Cardinal in five meetings ... Last season, Stanford defeated
the Trojans, 1-0 in Southern California ... On Sunday,
Stanford will face No. 18 UCLA (8-2-0) at 1 pm ... Stanford
leads the series, 3-1-1 ... The Cardinal clinched the Pac-10
title last season with a 2-1 overtime win over host UCLA.

Leading the Cardinal: Senior captain Emily Burt is one
of the top forwards in the conference ... She ranks 7th in the
Pac-10 in total scoring (13) and seventh in goals scored (5)
... Burt leads the squad in total points and goals while tying
for the lead in assists (3).
Pac-10 Play: Stanford will look to capture its third-straight conference crown ... The Cardinal has dominated Pac-10 play over the past two seasons, compiling an impressive 13-1 record ... Stanford has outscored opponents 34-10 in conference play over the past two seasons ... For the first time in conference history, all 10 schools will field a women's soccer team in 1997.
Head Coach Steve Swanson: Swanson is entering his second season at the helm of the Stanford women's soccer program ... He previously served as the head women's soccer coach and assistant director of athletics at Dartmouth College from 1990-95 ... In his first season on The Farm, Swanson led the Cardinal to a first place finish in the Pac-10 and a berth in the 1996 NCAA tournament ... The Cardinal finished the season with a 12-9-0 record, including a 6-1-0 mark in conference play ... Four members of Swanson's 1996 squad earned All-Pac-10 recognition while Erin Martin earned Pac-10 Player of the Year and All-American honors.
