We took 24 minutes to get started on Friday, but once we did we were unstoppable. In the last 36 minutes of the game we outscored UCDavis 14-3 and our shooting percentage rose innumerably between the first and second halves. That 36 minute team is the team we are now, and shows the intensity and passion we will have here on out.
The defense remained tough throughout the game causing several midfield transition turnovers as well as effectively using our zone defense to shut down Davis's offense.
Kate had some key saves in the goal off of one on one shots and the defense did a superb job of making sure the shots came from outside of 6 meters. Kate not only had eight saves but had a handful of groundball pick ups and clears out.
On the attacking end, the first goal of the season was scored by freshman Michelle DeChant, second goal by sophomore Megan Burker, third goal was by junior Nina Pantano, and the fourth goal by Senior Abbi Hills. Now I do love symbols (so does our favorite symbolic systems major Tiffany Chao) so I view this as a prime example of this team's distinct team unity, we cannot ask for anything more than solid contributions from every class. I am still trying to figure out the meaning behind the reverse chronological order of ages behind the first four shots, if you figure it out let me know. What I do know is that I expect the across the board scoring (7 contributors) to be harbinger of the season, and what our team is capable of achieving when we believe in the team as much as we believe in ourselves.
