Stanford senior Maria Fortino has stepped into an instrumental role with the Cardinal lacrosse team this year. The versatile Fortino has played mostly in the midfield, including making eight starts. She has scored five goals and added three assists, but is often the type that does the little things that do not show up in the scoresheet. Fortino took a few moments to answer some questions from gostanford.com.
GoStanford.com: What has been your most exciting experience at Stanford away from lacrosse?
Fortino: One of my most exciting experiences at Stanford away from lacrosse was running around campus with the band and my freshman dorm on the first night of Freshman Orientation. I had no idea what was really going on, but I felt such a sense of school spirit. It made me so excited and grateful to be part of such a special community.
GoStanford.com: What is the best experience you have had with the lacrosse team?
Fortino: My best experience with the lacrosse team this year was when we beat JMU after being down five goals in the first half.
GoStanford.com: You have seen your role increase each year, but especially this year as a starter. What would you attribute the improvement to and how hard was it to keep working when you weren't seeing much playing time at the beginning of your career?
Fortino: I have seen my role change over the years in some ways, but one aspect that I try to never change is my work ethic and my commitment to my teammates. I would do anything for my teammates and I want to fill roles that will help us succeed.
GoStanford.com: This year's team is a young team, do you feel like you need to take a leadership role?
I definitely understand that it has been my responsibility to help lead our team.
GoStanford.com: How good can this team be? The schedule was very tough at the beginning of the year, but the team has been playing well lately.
I think what has been so special about our team this year is that we have embraced each moment and have continued to strive to be the best team we can be. We are committed to improving upon each game and working towards an NCAA title. Believing in one another and bringing together all of the pieces will be crucial to our success in the coming weeks.
GoStanford.com: What is something Stanford fans don't know about you?
Fortino: I can wiggle my ears.
GoStanford.com: What are you studying and what are you plans after you graduate?
Fortino: I am studying Political Science with a focus in political theory and a minor in Spanish. After graduation, I am planning on spending the summer in Peru and working in D.C. for a few years before applying for law school.
