Notre Dame, Ind. - Senior Nina Pantano scored a goal with 18 seconds remaining in regulation to snap a 5-5 tie and lift the Stanford women's lacrosse team to a 6-5 road victory over Notre Dame at the Loftus Sports Center on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinal got goals from six different players, as Coach Uhlfelder's squad improved to 7-5 on the season, while the Irish fall to 3-8.
Stanford got on the board first as Liz Piselli netted an unassisted score just 1:34 into the contest. Notre Dame answered back with two straight goals, as Crysti Foote assisted on a Jackie Bowers goal at the 5:27 mark, then tallied an unassisted goal shortly thereafter to give the Irish the lead.
The Cardinal tied the game less than five minutes later, as senior Kelsey Twist tallied on a free position shot to pull Stanford even at 2-2. Junior Megan Burker scored an unassisted goal at the 19:35 mark of the first half, giving the Cardinal a 3-2 lead before Notre Dame's Brittany Fox tallied just 27 seconds later to tie the game at 3-3. Junior Sarah Bach increased her team-leading goal total to 22 on the season, scoring on a free position shot late in the period to give the Cardinal a 4-3 lead heading into the intermission.
The second half proved to be a defensive struggle until the 9:11 mark of the period when Kaki Orr tied the game at 4-4 with a goal. Freshman Megan McClain answered back for the Cardinal, tallying her fifth goal of the season with less than nine minutes remaining to push Stanford ahead by one. The Irish turned around to even the score once again, with Foote netting her second goal of the contest at the 22:10 mark. Play continued back and forth until Pantano was able to beat Notre Dame goalkeeper Carol Dixon from the left side of the goal with just 18 seconds remaining in regulation. The Irish controlled the following draw, but Stanford forced a turnover and ran out the clock to seal the 6-5 win.
Freshman Laura Shane
produced another outstanding performance in the cage for the Cardinal, turning away 14 Notre Dame shots. Dixon had seven stops in the net for the Irish, as Notre Dame out-shot the Cardinal by a 26-19 margin.
Notre Dame's Foote led all scorers with two goals on the afternoon, while Burker, Pantano, Twist, Bach, Piselli, and McClain all scored once for Stanford. Burker led all Cardinal players with a team-high five shot attempts.
Stanford returns to The Farm for the squad's final two home games of the 2005 season next weekend. The Cardinal will take on Yale on Friday night, before hosting Denver in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match up on Sunday afternoon.
