The Stanford women’s gymnastics team will take on two Super Six finalists and eight NCAA regional qualifiers during its nine-meet 2012 schedule, coach
Kristen Smyth announced this week.
Coming off a fourth-place national finish, Stanford will play host to rival and third-place NCAA finisher UCLA (Feb. 3) and NCAA qualifier Oregon State (March 3) during its three-event home schedule. In between, the Cardinal welcomes regional qualifier Arizona State (Feb. 17).
Stanford opens its season on Jan. 4 with the NorCal quad meet at 2011 NCAA regional qualifier San Jose State. The meet also includes defending Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champion UC Davis and Western Athletic Conference runner-up Sacramento State.
A quad meet involving Illinois and San Jose State follows at Arizona on Jan. 12, followed by a dual at 10-time national champion Georgia, on Jan. 21.
Other road duals will take place at Cal (Jan. 26) and at nine-time NCAA champion Utah (Feb. 23), which finished fifth in the nation last year.
Stanford returns five All-Americans from last season, including NCAA uneven bars runner-up Samantha Shapiro, and first-team balance beam selections Ivana Hong and Amanda Spinner.
Stanford, under Smyth’s direction since 2002, has five NCAA top-10 finishes in the past six years. The Cardinal also is one of only four programs in the country with at least three top-four finishes since 2008.
In addition to the team’s 11 returning gymnasts, including 2012 Canadian Olympian Kristina Vaculik, Stanford welcomes a four-person freshman class of Melissa Chuang, Jenna Frowein, Taylor Rice, and Maggie Teets.
