No. 8 Stanford, No. 5 Alabama Set To Compete at NCAA West Regional
March 27, 2006 Stanford, Ca - The eighth-ranked Stanford women's gymnastics team is among six schools, along with fifth-ranked Alabama, that have been selected to compete at the NCAA West Regional on April 8 (6 p.m.) at Maples Pavilion. Stanford (West Region) is one of the schools to host the NCAA Regional along with Iowa State (North Central Region), Arkansas (South Central Region), LSU (Central Region), Michigan (Northeast Region) and Georgia (Southeast Region). Six teams, five all-around competitors (who are not on a qualifying team) and one individual event specialist per event (who has a minimum Regional Qualifying Score - RQS - of 9.4) were named to each of the six regions. The top teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships at Corvallis, Oregon, April 20-22, hosted by Oregon State University. In addition, the event winners at the regional championships will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or the all-around qualifiers. In addition to Stanford and Alabama, the West Region field will include #16 Oregon State, San Jose State, Sacramento State, and Boise State. Alabama is one of the premier women's gymnastics teams in the country. The Crimson Tide features Ashley Miles and Terin Humphrey. Miles has won 16 postseason championships during her career, including three NCAA, five SEC and eight NCAA Regional championships. Miles was a four-year member of the United States National Team (1997-98, 1999-2002) and helped the U.S. National Team to a bronze medal at the 2001 World Championships. Miles is currently ranked first in the nation on Vault (9.935) and second in the nation on Floor Exercise (9.940). Humphrey won the NCAA Bars Championship last year, and earned first team All-American honors on Beam, Bars and Floor Exercise at the 2005 NCAA's. Humphrey, a member of the 2004 United States Olympic Team, earned two Olympic silver medals, one as part of the USA squad, and individually on Bars. Stanford, meanwhile, has been blessed with several highly ranked gymnasts this year, including sophomore Liz Tricase. Tricase remains first in the nation on Bars (9.960) and tied for fourth on Vault (9.920). Tickets are now on sale for the NCAA West Regional at Stanford University.
