Stanford Gymnasts to Compete in Illinois Regional

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford women's gymnastics team received a No. 2 seed to the NCAA regionals and is headed to Champaign, Ill., to compete in the April 7 meet for the right to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

This marks the 29th consecutive season that Stanford has qualified for NCAA regional competition.

In the Champaign Regional - one of six around the country - Oklahoma and Stanford are the top two seeds and will be joined by (in order of seeds) Denver, Illinois, Kentucky, and Illinois-Chicago. The top two advance to the 12-team NCAA Championships in Duluth, Ga., April 20-22.

The top 36 teams in the country, based on a Regional Qualifying Score formula calculated through scoring average, advanced to the regionals. The top two all-around competitors and event winners not on qualifying teams advance to the NCAA's as well.

Stanford, ranked No. 11 in the nation, has advanced to the NCAAs three of the past four seasons and seven of the past 10. Of the top teams in its region, Oklahoma is ranked No. 2, Denver is No. 14, Illinois is No. 22, and Kentucky is No. 24.

The Cardinal has won four regional team titles and 34 individual titles in its 34-year history.

Other regional sites and the top seeded teams in each are: Auburn, Ala. (Georgia), Fayetteville, Ark. (UCLA), Raleigh, N.C. (Florida), Salt Lake City (Nebraska), and Seattle (Alabama).
