Washington Claims Slim Victory over Cardinal

STANFORD, Calif. - In the season-opener for both schools, the University of Washington women's gymnastics team defeated Stanford 191.525-190.700. A tight contest from the beginning, the Cardinal, ranked 11th in the Coaches Preseason Top 25 Poll, opened strong in the first two events (vault, uneven parallel bars) and led at the mid-point of the meet 96.450-96.350. The Huskies, ranked ninth in the preseason poll, came back with well-executed performances in both the beam and the floor exercise to pull away with the victory. The win was Washington's third consecutive over Stanford.

"I think we performed well tonight," said Stanford head coach Mark Cook. "Washington is a very good team. They qualified for nationals last season and nearly made the Super Six. We gave it a good run and I think that we will be as good as Washington. We'll get stronger as the year goes on and we will be in great shape by the Pac-10 Conference Championships."
