Women's Gymnastics Upsets No. 3 Utah

March 6, 1998

STANFORD, Calif. - The 18th-ranked Stanford women's gymnastics team came through with arguably the program's biggest win in its 17-year history with a 195.550-194.275 victory over 10-time national champion and third-ranked Utah in its final home appearance of the 1998 season. In the first-ever meeting between the two schools on The Farm, Stanford captured its first-ever win over Utah in seven tries. Stanford, which set a new season-high with its 195.550, surpassing the previous best of 194.300, improved its season record to 7-4 overall. With the loss, Utah fell to 6-2.

Stanford won each event, both team and individually, as several Cardinal gymnasts set season highs. Junior co-captain Amy Murakami (Wayland, MA/Wayland HS) led the charge with a season-high 39.250 to win the all-around. Murakami scored season-high's on the vault (9.725) and the beam (9.850) en route to the all-around title. Senior co-captain Keri Monahan (Laurel Springs, NJ/Paul VI HS), making the final home appearance of her career, posted season-high's on the vault (9.850) and the beam (9.850), winning the beam by a tie-breaker. Both Murakami's and Monahan's beam scores were the best by a Cardinal this season. Sophomore Larissa Fontaine (Deerfield, IL/Stevenson HS) won the vault with a 9.875 and the bars with a season-high-tying 9.900. Sophomore Kim Young (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mtn. HS) scored season-high's in all three events she competed in. She opened with a 9.800 on the bars, scored a 9.825 on the beam, and finished with a 9.875 in the floor exercise. Also scoring season-high's were Jenny Wilson (9.850 on the vault and 9.775 on the bars) and Katie Fitzpatrick (9.725 on the beam). As a team, Stanford came through with its best performances of the season on the vault, the bars and in the floor exercise.
