No. 5 Stanford Falls to Top-Ranked Georgia
Jan. 13, 2008
No. 5 Stanford Women's Gymnastics welcomed three-time defending champion Georgia to Burnham Pavilion, but weren't able to take down the top-ranked squad in the nation after falling 196.875-196.150 on Sunday afternoon. Stanford had many good performances on the day with redshirt freshman Allyse Ishino and junior Nicole Ourada scoring a 9.900 each on vault. Freshman Shelley Alexander made her collegiate debut on vault as well and scored a 9.825. The Cardinal was once again led by Ishino on bars, when she put forth a score of 9.875 in the event. The Gym Dogs had a strong performance in this event as well when sophomore Grace Taylor scored a 9.900. On beam, sophomore Carly Janiga, who was the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, put forth the high total when she scored a 9.900. In Janiga's other event, the bars, she scored a 9.825 to cap off her solid performance. The Cardinal was very close entering the floor event, but Georgia put the meet away with three 9.900's in the final event. The Cardinal was led by junior Kelly Fee, who put forth a score of 9.850. The performance was strong as the Cardinal hit 23 of 24 routines, but head coach Kristen Smyth knows there is work to be done as the Cardinal continues their season. "We performed well today and I was very pleased with our team and the effort they showed today," said Smyth. "We hit 23 of 24 routines, but we know we have a lot of work to do to try and keep improving. This was a very good team today, they have won three championships in a row, and we just need to continue to work and get better as a team."
The Cardinal will return to the gym when they face the University of Arizona. The meet will take place on Sunday, January 20 at 2:00 p.m. at Burnham Pavilion. Final Team Results: Final Individual Results: Beam: Bars: Floor Exercise: Vault: |
