STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford women's golf put forth a strong showing on the first day of the Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Condoleezza Rice at Stanford Golf Course, posting a team score of 289 (+5). The Cardinal is tied for fourth with two rounds remaining, trailing USC (+2), Oregon State (+3) and Vanderbilt (+4).

"We're really happy with the way we played today," said Margot and Mitch Milias Director of Women's Golf Anne Walker. "We came out with a lot of energy and got off to a great start. This course was playing tough today and I think it's going to play tough again tomorrow. We handled it very well today and we used the information we had coming into today to really help us. I like where we are and I think it's a great first day."

Freshman Mariah Stackhouse is tied for fourth after shooting 71 (-1). Stackhouse made a pair of birdies, on the fourth and 12th holes, remaining even or under par throughout the round.

"I felt like I played very consistently," said Stackhouse. "I made a lot of good par saves, but at the same time left a lot of birdie opportunities out there. To turn in one-under the first day is pretty good. It could have been a lot better, but I'm not displeased at all. I think the team's in good standing too, but I'm quite pleased with how I played."

Lauren Kim joined her fellow freshman atop the Cardinal leaderboard, carding a 73 (+1), good for a share of 17th. Kim recovered from a double bogey on the third hole, making a pair of birdies on the next four holes.

Mariko Tumangan posted her best round of the season with a 73 (+2). She is tied for 25th.

Marissa Mar and Sally Watson posted rounds of 74 (+3) for a share of 34th place.

"Personally, I was a little disappointed with how I played," said Watson. "I just couldn't really find anything out there today. I was fighting hard, but my game feels in good shape. I've been playing well recently and hopefully, I can come back strong in the next couple of days. Overall, I was impressed with how the team did. I think that's a really solid first round."

Play continues tomorrow at 8:30.
