Stanford to Compete at NCAA Championships
The Tournament:
The Stanford women's golf team will head to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the NCAA Women's Golf Championships May 21-24 ... The tournament will be played as Ohio State's Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio.
Tournament Format:
Eighteen teams will compete for the 1997 title ... 72 holes will be contested over four days ... Tee times will begin at 8 am each morning ... Teams will play with five players, counting the top four scores towards the team total.
Field:
Defending champion Arizona leads the 18 team field ... Other teams include Arizona State, Auburn, Campbell, Florida, Furman, New Mexico State, Ohio State, Oregon, San Jose State, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Texas Christian, Tulsa, UCLA, Wake Forest, Washington.
Last Year:
Arizona won the NCAA Championship in a playoff last season ... They tied with San Jose State at 1240 ... Texas finished third at 2141 ... Stanford finished fifth at 1248 ... Arizona's Marisa Baena took the individual title with a 72-hole total 296 ... Kellee Booth of Arizona State finished second at 303 followed by Kathy Choi of UCLA at 304 ... Head Coach Caroline O'Connor:
Caroline O'Connor was selected as the interim head coach for the Stanford women's golf team on February 1, 1996 ... At the start of the 1996-97 season, O'Connor was named co-head coach of the Cardinal team ... Last season, the Cardinal tied for third at the Pac-10 championships and went on to finish in fifth place at the NCAA Championships ... Before coming to Stanford, O'Connor was a golf instructor at the Academy of Golf at PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. ... She also played on the Future's Professional Women's Golf Tour for two years and was a golf shop manager at Jonathan's Landing Golf Club for three years.
