Stanford Dominates All-NorPac Picks With Top Player, Rookie And Coach Awards
Nov. 4, 2009
Thursday, 1:30 p.m.: Where Will You Be? | Tournament Central Media Guide | Soza Says | Statistics STANFORD, Calif.- On the eve of the 12th annual NorPac Championship, the Stanford field hockey program was well-represented with a league-best nine all-conference selections as announced at the annual awards banquet. Among the highlights: junior Xanthe Travlos earning Stanford's second straight Player of the Year honor and freshman Becky Dru extending the Cardinal's stranglehold on the Rookie of the Year award to seven seasons. Meanwhile, Lesley Irvine was named Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons. The West Division regular season champion, Stanford (13-4, 5-1 NorPac) is one victory shy of matching the program record of 14 wins established back in 1997 and has been a fixture in the national rankings for almost two months. A two-time All-NorPac first team honoree, Travlos is enjoying perhaps her best season. The 5-1 junior from Staffordshire, England, ranks second on the squad in goals (10) and shots (49), while also chipping in with a pair of assists for 22 points in 17 games. Earlier this year in a win over UC Davis, she netted the second hat trick of her career. Travlos follows fellow England import Camille Gandhi as Stanford's second straight NorPac Player of the Year. For the seventh consecutive year, a Stanford player claimed the Maria Whitehead Rookie of the Year award. This time around, Dru was the recipient after leading the team in points (27), thanks to 10 goals and seven assists. Of her 48 shots, 32 have been on target. A four-time NorPac Player of the Week pick, Dru extends the list of Stanford players earning the rookie honor, following up past winners Stephanie Byrne (2008), Camille Gandhi (2007), Nora Soza (2006), Caroline Hussey (2005), Jess Zutz (2004) and Cara-Lynn Lopresti (2003). Joining Dru and Travlos as first team selections were junior Camille Gandhi and sophomore Alessandra Moss. Gandhi led Stanford in shots (50) while contributing six goals and two assists for a total of 14 points to go along with two defensive saves. Moss has posted four shutouts while playing every minute in goal this season, making 84 saves for a 1.71 GAA. Perhaps no better indication of Stanford's talent and depth is senior Midori Uehara being named to the second team. For the second straight season, Uehara is Stanford's leading scorer with 11 goals. She has recorded 22 total points and 34 of her 49 shots have been on frame. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Beth Ridley was this year's recipient of the Julie Nagle Extraordinary Teammate award, given to the player who exhibits extraordinary care and support of her teammates, while demonstrating a genuine love for the sport and her academic institution. The award was established in 2005 by Appalachian State University in memory of student-athlete Julie Nagle. No. 15 Stanford's march to the postseason begins Thursday afternoon, as the Cardinal looks to capture its third consecutive conference tournament title. The Cardinal battles Appalachian State in the first round of the NorPac Championship at 1:30 p.m. For the second time in three years, Stanford will host the NorPac Championship as the action gets underway at the Varsity Turf.
