What To Look For | Schedule Is Tough | Who's Back? | Who's New?
STANFORD, Calif.- Stanford defeated Pacific 3-1 on Tuesday afternoon in a scrimmage, signaling the start of the 2009-10 athletic campaign on The Farm.
Pacific, which defeated 2008 NorPac regular season champion California 2-1 in a scrimmage over the weekend, looked sharp early on. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead into the break after converting a penalty stroke.
But Stanford bounced back, receiving second-half tallies from junior Camille Gandhi, sophomore Stephanie Byrne and senior Midori Uehara.
"I was pleased with our effort today and it was great to receive contributions from our returnees and newcomers," said head coach Lesley Irvine. "We were able to work on some different plays throughout the match and overall it was a good first step to our season."
It was the first of three scrimmages for the Cardinal, which also plays at California (Aug. 22) and hosts UC Davis (Aug. 26) before the season opener against Missouri State on Aug. 30.
Stanford closed out the 2008 season at 9-11 overall, advancing to the NCAA Play-in game for the second straight season. The Cardinal, which won seven of its final nine games, was also crowned NorPac Tournament champions for the second year in a row with a 2-1 victory over No. 16 California.
