Gandhi Selected To USA Women's Junior World Cup Team

STANFORD, Calif.- Junior Camille Gandhi has been selected to the 18-member 2009 USA Women's Junior World Cup Team, as announced yesterday following the Junior National Training Combine at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass. The 2009 BDO Women's Junior World Cup, the premier showcase for the world's top junior field hockey teams, will be held this summer in Boston. The top 16 women's under-21 national teams will compete at Harvard University's Jordan Field from Aug. 3-16. USA Field Hockey, the national governing body for field hockey in the United States, will host the event. The 2009 BDO Women's Junior World Cup is the largest international field hockey event ever to be held in the United States. Almost 300 athletes from 16 nations will participate in the tournament. Held every four years, the BDO Women's Junior World Cup represents the top international event for international field hockey athletes under the age of 21. Now in its sixth edition, the tournament debuted in Ottawa, Canada, in 1989, with the most recent event held in Santiago, Chile, in 2005. The 16 national teams competing in the tournament are: Argentina, Australia, Belarus, Chile, China, England, France, Germany, India, Lithuania, Korea, Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain and the United States. Recently named to the 16-member 2009-10 Women's Developmental Team by USA Field Hockey, Gandhi is no stranger to the sport's highest level of competition. A dual national citizen, Gandhi was selected to the U.S. Under-21 National Team and led the U.S. past Chile with the game-winning overtime goal at the 2008 Junior Pan American Games in Mexico City. She competed for the U.S. Under-21 squad at the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney, starting all four games of the tournament. A USA Field Hockey Junior National Camp invitee, Gandhi was selected as one of five representatives from the state of California to compete in the Woman's National Championship at the USA Field Hockey National Training Center. Making it a true family affair, brothers Mo and Jo Gandhi also were named to the USA U-18 men's team.
An NFHCA All-West Region First Team selection and Third Team All-American from WomensFieldHockey.com, Gandhi was named the 2008 NorPac Player of the Year while leading the Cardinal in assists and shots and ranking second on the squad in points. In 39 career games, she has scored 10 goals, dished out 15 assists, registered 35 points and attempted 89 shots.
