Stanford, Calif. -
Mary Shofner was named assistant women's rowing Coach at Stanford today. Shofner's impeccable record, reputation and experience led to her selection.
As varsity lightweight coach at the University of Wisconsin, Shofner led the Badger lightweight eight to three consecutive Intercollegiate Rowing Association national championships from 2004-06, defeating perennial powers Princeton and Harvard. Her crews won the EAWRC conference title in 2005 and 2006, and finished third overall and first collegiately in the 2005 Head of the Charles Regatta.
"Mary jump-started lightweight rowing at Wisconsin and took it to a new level," said Stanford women's head coach Yasmin Farooq. "Her leadership as a collegiate coach is proven and her enthusiasm is unbounded. She knows how to succeed, and she will inspire our student-athletes and recruits. I am thrilled that she has joined us."
Director of Rowing and men's head coach Craig Amerkhanian said Stanford Rowing was well aware of Mary's Wisconsin accomplishments.
"Mary's Wisconsin teams have set the standard for women's lightweight collegiate rowing. Mary is a professional coach who will bring out the best in our student-athletes. She will recruit with the same dedication that propelled her team's to three consecutive IRA championships."
Shofner is enthusiastic about this new challenge.
"I am looking forward to starting this year and working with the Stanford student-athletes and Coach Farooq," said Shofner. "Stanford is one of the premier institutions in the world, and it is an honor to be associated with such a great coaching staff and rowing program."
"Mary will be an invaluable asset to Stanford Crew," senior associate athletic director Ray Purpur added. "She is a complete coach, and we will benefit from her experience."
This past summer Shofner worked with the nation's top collegiate athletes as a coach for the U.S. National Team Development Camp.
Shofner began her coaching career at her alma mater, serving as the novice coach at the University of Central Florida. As a rower at UCF, Shofner was on the Athletic Department Dean's List and received the 1999 Terry Ivesdal Smythe Award for Spirit. She was a bronze medalist at the IRA regatta in 1999 and won the Dad Vail regatta in 1998 as a novice.
Shofner will begin her duties immediately.
