STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford Rowing will host the seventh annual Pac-10 Challenge presented by Windermere Real Estate this weekend at Redwood Shores in Redwood City. The event will kick off the spring rowing season for both the men's and women's teams.
The two-day regatta and free community festival takes place on Saturday, March 28 from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The regatta will feature more than 114 crew races between the nation's top universities as well as more than 400 club and high school rowers.
Athletes will compete in two days of Henley-style racing, a one-on-one or a two-boat race used for competition at the famous Henley Royal Regatta in Henley-on-Thames, England.
Drawing nearly 1,000 athletes and countless spectators each year, the PAC-10 Challenge is one of the most anticipated rowing events on the West Coast. In addition to Stanford University, visiting teams include Clemson, Gonzaga, Northeastern, Ohio State, Orange Coast, Princeton, Saint Mary's, UC San Diego, Santa Clara, UC Davis, UCLA, USC, Virginia and Wisconsin as well as an exhibition row featuring National Team and Olympic hopefuls from the California Rowing Center. High school crews Berkeley High School, Los Gatos, Marin, Newport, Pacific and St. Ignatius will also race head to head.
"In a time when we all have to pull together, this regatta represents an energy that can inspire our country," said Stanford Director of Rowing and men's head coach Craig Amerkhanian. "Rowing personifies the ultimate team effort, and spectators will enjoy watching some of the best athletes in the country working toward one goal, improving one another in a selfless fashion--all for the benefit of boat speed."
Women's squads scheduled to take part in the event include No. 4 Stanford, featuring the varsity eight boat that finished second at 2008 NCAA Championships, No. 5 California, No. 6 Virginia, No. 12 Ohio State, No. 13 Clemson, Saint Mary's and Santa Clara.
Women's lightweight squads include Stanford, bronze medalists at the IRA National Championships last season, as well as reigning IRA National Champion Wisconsin and Princeton.
Men's teams include Stanford, California, Gonzaga, Northeastern, UC Davis, UCLA, Santa Clara, UC San Diego, USC and Wisconsin.
Racing begins on Saturday at 9 a.m. PT, with Sunday's action to start five minutes prior at 8:55 a.m. PT. Races will run every eight minutes.
Windermere's heritage of supporting collegiate crew racing began over 20 years ago when the company sponsored the first annual Windermere Cup regatta in Seattle. Held in partnership with the University of Washington, the Windermere Cup has become one of the largest free community events in Seattle, welcoming both national and international crew teams for exciting competition and commencing the official opening day of boating season for the waters of the Puget Sound. In 2003, Windermere expanded it's involvement with the sport and launched, in conjunction with Stanford University, the Windermere Real Estate Rowing Classic at Redwood Shores.
