Stanford Novice rowers were victorious at the Head of the Lagoon in their first official race of the season on Sunday. Navigating a 5000m
course with turns and bridges, the Cardinal won the Women's Open Four, Women's Collegiate Novice Eight, and the Women's Collegiate Intermediate Four races.
The Novice Eight lineup of: coxswain Amelia Carr, stroke Sonia Poltovarski, Melissa Hulme, Adrienne Fritsch, Cassie Kull, Julia Liebner, Diane Eaton, Kelly Fero and Mandy Kovach placed first, defeating Sonoma State. The Open Women's Four lineup of Amelia Carr, Stroke Kelly Fero, Drusia Dickson, Melissa Hulme and Katie O'Neil defeated Sonoma State's varsity rowers to place first in that event. The Intermediate Four of: coxswain Laura Chang, Stroke Meredith Carpenter, Katherine Boren, Annie Lindseth and Hannah Michelsen were uncontested but posted a competitive time and had a solid race. Amelia Carr, Kelly Fero, and Melissa Hulme, all Class of 2010, raced in
back-to-back events and therefore won two gold medals.
"Each member of the team has displayed an early commitment to bringing their best effort and focus to every practice and therefore we have had success with our early season regattas." said Mary Shofner, coach of the Novice Women's Team.
Stanford's Monica Hilcu organized the highly successful Head of the Lagoon Regatta, which attracted more than 200 teams.
The Cardinal Novice Eight defeated Cal last weekend in a pre-season
This weekend's racing concludes the non-traditional racing season and the
sixth week of practice for these walk-on student-athletes.
Stanford's season resumes in the spring at the San Diego Crew Classic on March 30, 2007.
