Candice Wiggins Named Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week

Dec. 24, 2007

Senior Candice Wiggins (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) of the Stanford women's basketball team was selected as the Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Dec. 17-23.

Wiggins averaged 21.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 3.0 steals in leading Stanford (10-1) to wins over Mew Mexico (73-54) and top-ranked defending national champion Tennessee (73-69, in overtime) last week. In the victory over Tennessee, arguably the biggest win for the program over the last decade, Wiggins stepped up with a team-leading 22 points, and grabbed six rebounds as the Cardinal ended an 11-year, 11-game losing streak against the Lady Vols. Wiggins’ efforts last week also earned her U.S. Bank Pac-10 Player of the Week recognition for the second week in a row.

This is Wiggins’ second consecutive Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor and the fourth for the women’s basketball team in the 2007-08 season. Wiggins and the rest of the second-ranked Stanford women’s basketball team return to action Friday, Dec. 28 as they begin their quest for an eighth consecutive regular-season Pac-10 title by hosting the Washington State Cougars at 7 p.m. Stanford then ends the weekend with a 2 p.m. contest Sunday, Dec. 30, against the Washington Huskies.

Also nominated: Brook Lopez (Men’s Basketball), Tanner Gardiner (Wrestling).
