Assistant coach Charmin Smith has created the Katrina Assist Pledge Program, where fans will pledge money for each assist recorded during the season. The funds raised through this program will be donated to Peninsula Habitat, our local chapter of Habitat for Humanity International. Peninsula Habitat is participating in Operation Home Delivery, a tremendous nationwide effort created to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.

"It's often the case with disasters that the early response from the American public is extraordinary, but the challenge is to not let the efforts die down and lose steam," noted Smith. "The aftermath of Katrina caused so much displacement and homelessness and devastation, that there is going to be a need for continued relief for a long time to come. My hope is that the Katrina Assist Pledge Program will help improve the momentum of Katrina Relief efforts. This is one of those events in our life that you're going to look back on and wonder what you did to make a difference. Our team and our supporters, along with Habitat for Humanity, are going to make a difference."

Operation Home Delivery, Habitat for Humanity International's new program created in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, is providing assistance and rebuilding opportunities in New Orleans and other areas along the Gulf Coast affected by Katrina. Through this program, Habitat for Humanity is building home frames outside the region and shipping them, along with other building supplies, to areas along the Gulf Coast where families, volunteers and builders will finish building the homes. These "homes in a box" will enable Habitat for Humanity to provide many more homes, far more quickly, than would be possible if the program were centered in the devastated region. Within two weeks of launching the program, Habitat had already shipped more that five dozen "homes in a box" and it's gaining momentum.

Peninsula Habitat for Humanity, working with purchased and donated materials, will join with community volunteers and building specialists to assemble frames right here in the Bay Area for shipment to the Gulf Coast. Your pledges will support these local efforts.
