Stanford Celebrates Tradition of Women's Athletic Excellence
Women in Sports Celebration brings together female student-athletes and aspiring girls for a day of celebration and inspiration
Feb. 11, 2013
STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford Athletics hosted a Women in Sports Celebration at the Women's Basketball game against Colorado on Sunday, January 27 to recognize the achievements of the Cardinal's women's teams and inspire the next generation of female student-athletes.
Fans attending the game had the opportunity to learn skills and interact with student athletes from soccer, gymnastics, volleyball, lacrosse, golf and field hockey.
These teams were then joined by student-athletes from track & field and softball for a halftime ceremony where the 2011-12 Capital One Cup, awarded to the best collegiate women's athletic program in the country, was presented by Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics Bernard Muir to a group of senior student-athletes.
The day held special significance for a group of 100 4th & 5th grade girls from the Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative (BAWSI) who enjoyed a pregame basketball clinic and lunch provided by the Women's Basketball program. The BAWSI girls and their families then cheered on the Cardinal in its 69-56 victory over Colorado.
