Feb. 4, 2013

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford forward Chiney Ogwumike set a Pac-12 single-season record Monday by earning her fifth Pac-12 Player of the Week honor.

This year she had previously earned the honor Nov. 12, Nov. 19, Dec. 24 and Jan. 28. It is also the eighth honor of her career, leaving her just one back of former Stanford All-Americans Candice Wiggins (2004-08) and Jayne Appel (2007-11).

Ogwumike earned this week's honor, her second in a row, thanks in part to a weekend highlighted by a career-best 32 points in Sunday's 65-45 win at Oregon State. For the weekend, which included Friday night's 86-62 rout of Oregon, Ogwumike shot 56.8 percent (21-for-37), averaged 27.5 points and 15.5 rebounds and made three steals.

She posted a double-double in each contest, bringing her conference-leading season total to 17. Sunday's 32-point effort was the second of her career and eclipsed her previous best of 31 points set this past Dec. 15 against Pacific. Against the Beavers Sunday, Ogwumike also grabbed 18 rebounds, just one shy of her career best of 19 set Dec. 22 at Tennessee. Friday in Eugene, she posted 22 points with 13 rebounds and a 9-of-13 performance from the field against the Ducks.

The weekend sweep in Oregon improved the Cardinal to 20-2 overall and kept it tied atop the Pac-12 table with California at 9-1. On the year Ogwumike leads the Pac-12 with 22.4 points a game and a 58.4 field-goal percentage, and sits second with 12.3 rebounds per game. All that is keeping her from being on pace to win the Pac-12 Triple Crown is the 12.5 rebounds a game of Oregon's Jillian Alleyne.

No. 4/5 Stanford returns to Maples Pavilion this weekend, hosting Arizona Friday at 7 p.m. and Arizona State Sunday at 2 p.m. Sunday's contest will be aired nationally on the Pac-12 Network.
