Jam Session Print
STANFORD, Calif. - The Guarding the Tradition collection is a commemorative series of six
original posters celebrating the excellence of Stanford Women's
Basketball. Six outstanding guards, Jennifer Azzi, Molly Goodenbour,
Sonja Henning, Kate Paye, Kate Starbird and Jamila Wideman will be
rendered in the powerful, single black brush strokes of sumi-e-Japanese
brush painting-by Stanford senior Drue Kataoka. The basketball stars'
images depicted in the original paintings will be featured in six new
posters for the 1999-2000 season.
Get ready to Jam with Jamila Wideman in "Jam Session", the second
poster in the Guarding the Tradition commemorative series. Emerging from
the negative space on center court, this Cardinal champion's fiery
presence takes control of the game. Mid-step and mid-way between past
and present, this remarkable point guard imprints her will indelibly on
the Cardinal tradition of excellence. While one foot fills the footsteps
of past players who began the tradition, the other foot strides forward
to a future where new players will cherish and guard the tradition.
Energized by the magic of Maples surging through her, Wideman confronts
victory head on. She runs down court with the ball as a whirling vortex
of energy at her fingertips. Dribbling with dazzling style and grace,
Jam pulls the excitement of Maples Pavilion into her orbit. Provoked by
the soft edges of memory, it is an extraordinary Jam Session and here
Jam has top billing as she Guards the Tradition.
Commissioned by Clifford Hayashi, the poster was released at the Oregon
game on Jan. 15 with a dedication speech by Jamila Wideman, recorded
from Israel where she plays professional basketball. Only 250 of each
poster will be printed in this numbered limited edition, and will be
sold for $25. All proceeds from the six posters in the Guarding The
Tradition collection will benefit the Stanford women's basketball
program. Copies of the first poster of the series "Bird Soars to New
Heights" depicting Kate Starbird, are still available by calling the
women's basketball office at (650) 723-0284.
