Cardinal Falls to UConn 94-78
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) - Nykesha Sales rewrote the record book to keep No. 3
Connecticut undefeated and give struggling No. 12 Stanford its fourth loss.
Sales set a Big East Conference record with 46 points to lead the Huskies to
a 94-78 victory against Stanford Sunday in the Honda Elite 4 Holiday Classic.
Sales, whose previous high was 28 points, was 18 of 27 from the floor
including six of seven from 3-point range. Her scoring effort also set a school
record.
"It was our first big test and it was a big win," said Sales, who dazzled
the 4,000 fans with an array of shots off drives and long-range jumpers. "For
us to step up the way we did says something about our team."
Rita Williams finished with 14 points and a team-high six assists while Amy
Duran had 11 points for the Huskies (10-0).
Heather Owens had 21 points for Stanford (2-4).
Despite Sales' performance, the Cardinal led by as much as 11 points early
and was up 44-42 at the half. Stanford led 62-58 when the Huskies went on a 9-2
run that was capped by Amy Duran's 3-pointer at 10:12 left to put Connecticut
67-64.
Stanford closed within 76-70 with 5:05 left but a 16-0 Huskies run put the
game out of reach.
The Cardinal committed 30 turnovers and Connecticut made 16 steals.
"You're not going to win any games when you throw the ball away 30 times,"
Stanford coach Tara Vanderveer. "Their quickness gave us a lot of problems.
"They got deflections, they got steals and they knew they couldn't let us go
inside."
