Wisconsin Tops Stanford in Season Opener

MADISON, Wis. - The Badgers and Cardinal opened their 1997-98 women's basketball seasons on Saturday in a game Wisconsin won 90-82. The UW victory over the Stanford Cardinal was before a crowd of 6,927 at the UW Fieldhouse.

Stanford (0-1) led 48-45 at the half, but the Badgers outscored the Cardinal 45-34 in the second half to post the win.

Ann Klapperich led the Badgers with 22 points, while LaTonya Sims added 16 points and 12 rebounds.

For Stanford, Vanessa Nygaard scored 24 points and Melody Peterson and Milena Flores had 18 each. Olympia Scott added 11 points for the losers.

Stanford travels to Purdue to face the Boilermakers on Sunday.
