STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Lauren St. Clair scored seven of her 18 points in
the final 39 seconds to lead 18th-ranked Stanford to a 79-72 overtime victory
over St. Joseph's on Friday night.
Bethany Donaphin led Stanford (2-1) with 23 points and Susan King added 13.
Susan Moran scored 30 points for St. Joseph's (1-1) and now has 1,007 points
in her career. The junior forward is third-fastest player in school history to
reach the 1,000-point mark.
Amra Mehmedic and Angela Zampella each added 13 points and Irina Krasnoshiok
had 12.
After the Cardinal scored the first basket of the second half, St. Joseph's
went on a 16-2 run, capped by Mehmedic's jumper, to take a 42-40 lead six
minutes into the half.
Stanford regained the lead at 44-42 a minute later on Susan King's breakaway
layup.
King's 3-pointer gave the Cardinal a 63-56 edge with 3:42 left, but the
Hawks scored the next seven points to tie it.
King gave Stanford the lead with 39 seconds left before Moran responded with
the tying basket 15 seconds later. King missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer,
sending the game into overtime.
St. Joseph's had a 72-70 lead with 1:35 remaining in overtime, but the
Cardinal scored the game's final nine points. St. Clair's 3-pointer at 0:39 put
Stanford up for good.
Stanford scored the game's first 11 points and held the Hawks to a single
field goal in the first seven minutes en route to a 36-26 halftime lead.
Donaphin made six of her seven shots in the first half for the Cardinal to
score 13 of her points.
