Smith's Layup Lifts No. 3 Stanford Past Southern California, 77-76

LOS ANGELES -- Charmin Smith's driving layup with 9.6 seconds to play lifted third-ranked Stanford to a 77-76 Pac-10 Conference victory over Southern California.

Tina Thompson and Michelle Campbell hit layups to give the Women of Troy (9-4, 3-1 Pac-10) a 75-74 lead with 22 seconds remaining. But Smith's basket gave the Cardinal (16-1, 4-0) the lead for good. USC missed a shot in the final seconds.

Kate Starbird finished with 40 points on 15-of-20 shooting for Stanford, which held a 73-67 lead with 3:05 to play. Smith finished with a career-high 15 points for the Cardinal, who shot 49 percent (29-of-59) overall and 7-of-16 from three-point range.

"I am very proud of how our team accepted the challenge of playing without two starters," said Stanford coach Tara Vanderveer, whose team played without Tara Harrington and Melody Peterson. "USC is a very talented team. It is obvious that they are talented and very athletic as they played well."

Thompson finished with 25 points and Campbell added 12 for USC, which shot under 40 percent (23-of-58) from the field and 8-of-16 from three-point range. The Women of Troy were outrebounded, 44-27.
