Top-Ranked Cardinal Hold Off Michigan, 77-74, to Win Hawaiian Air Wahine Classic

HONOLULU -- Kate Starbird hit two free throws with 14 seconds to play as top-ranked Stanford held off Michigan, 77-74, in the championship game of the Hawaiian Air Wahine Classic at Honolulu.

The Cardinal (7-0), who led by as many as 17 points in the second half at 51-34, needed Starbird's two foul shots to open up a three-point lead. Michigan (5-1) had one last chance to tie, but Stacey Thomas' three-pointer bounced off the rim.

Vanessa Nygaard had 22 points and 11 rebounds and Naomi Mulitauapoele added 19 and five for Stanford, which shot 46 percent (29-of-63) from the field and made 8-of-16 three-point shots. Starbird finished with 15 points and five assists.

Pollyanna Johns had 19 points and 10 rebounds while Thomas and Ann Lemire finished with 17 points apiece for Michigan, which shot 47 percent (29-of-62) from the floor. The Wolverines also committed 17 turnovers and made just 8-of-19 free throws.
