Stanford Athletes Record School's Best-Ever Performance At An Olympic Games

After 20 days of competition at the 2008 Olympic Games, Stanford athletes left Beijing with 25 medals, the greatest haul ever by the school's representatives at a single Olympics. The previous record was 21 medals, achieved at the 1924 Paris Games.

As the Beijing Games reached its penultimate day of competition, six Stanford athletes helped a pair of U.S. Teams reach heights unattained in 20 years. In the pool, the quartet of Tony Azevedo '05, Layne Beaubin, Peter Varellas '06 and Peter Hudnut '03 led an incredible run by the unheralded United States men's water polo team to a silver medal - its highest Olympic finish since 1988. On the volleyball court, Stanford grads Kevin Hansen '04 and Gabe Gardner '00 were part of a United States men's squad that culminated an emotional Olympics by bringing home gold for the first time since 1988.

Two more U.S. squads found their way to the medal stand, with women's volleyball earning silver in a loss to Brazil and baseball taking home bronze with an 8-4 victory over Japan. Helping pace volleyball on Saturday were Logan Tom (started all four sets, led team with 16 points on 15 kills and an ace) and Ogonna Nnamani (appeared as a substitute in the third set, tallied three kills). Meanwhile, baseball rallied from a 4-1 deficit to snag an 8-4 win and received a solid contribution from John Gall (batted .242 in eight games overall and tied for second on Team USA with four doubles and tied for third with five RBI).

There will be more medals coming the way of Stanford's Olympians following Day 17 of competition in Beijing. Behind the stellar play of former Stanford standouts Tony Azevedo `05, Layne Beaubien `99, Peter Hudnut `03, and Peter Varellas `06, the U.S. men's water polo team continued its improbable run through the tournament, downing Serbia, 10-5, to advance to the final for the first time since the 1988 Seoul Games. On the volleyball court, the U.S. men, featuring Gabe Gardner `00 and Kevin Hansen `04, upset Russia 3-2 to earn a shot at its first gold medal since 1988.

Stanford athletes added more gold and silver to the treasure chest in Day 16 of competition at the 2008 Olympic Games. Kerri Walsh `00 and partner Misty May-Traenor repeated as Olympic Champions by winning their 108th straight match, and Nicole Barnhart `05 and Rachel Buehler `07 collected gold medals as the U.S. women's soccer team also successfully defended its 2004 Olympic title.

More Stanford athletes moved on in their hunts for gold on Day 15 of the competition at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Jessica Mendoza `02, Lauren Lappin `06, and USA assistant coach John Rittman earned a berth into the Olympic final with a 4-1 victory over Japan, while former Stanford men's volleyball players Gabe Gardner `00 and Kevin Hansen `04 helped the U.S. into the semifinal round with a 3-2 (20-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-18, 15-12) victory over Serbia.
