BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team picked up its first dual win of the 2010-11 season, 23-10, at Pac-10 foe Cal State Bakersfield, Saturday. The Cardinal won seven of the 10 bouts, including two major decision victories and now stands at 1-1 (1-0 Pac-10) on the season, while the Roadrunners drop to 0-1 overall (0-1 Pac-10).
The dual started at 133 pounds with redshirt sophomore Matt Sencenbaugh picking up an 8-0 major decision over Eric Martinez. Sencenbaugh, who is 2-0 this season, scored four points on near falls while also registering a takedown, an escape and a point for riding time in the third period.
Cal State Bakersfield tied the score at 4-4 as 15th-ranked Elijah Nacita recorded a 9-0 major decision over redshirt freshman Jordan Gray at 141 pounds. However, redshirt sophomore Timmy Boone put Stanford ahead for good with a 5-3 decision over John Cardenas.
Sophomore Mike Kent registered a 6-0 decision over CSUB's Andrew Balch. Kent picked up three near fall points in the second period before posting a reversal and a point for riding time in the third for just his second collegiate victory at 157 pounds.
The Roadrunners pulled within three at 10-7 with Trevor Hall's 7-5 decision over senior Lucas Espericueta at 165 pounds. Stanford answered back, picking up wins in the next three bouts.
First, junior All-American Nick Amuchastegui, ranked No. 6 nationally, tallied four takedowns as he defeated Joey Granata, 10-3, at 174 pounds. Sophomore Spence Patrick followed it up with a 6-3 decision over Troy Goodban at 184 pounds for his first win of the young season. Finally, 11th-ranked Zack Giesen posted a 6-4 decision over No. 14 Riley Orozco at 197 pounds to put the Cardinal ahead 19-7.
The battle of the evening came at heavyweight as the Roadrunners' David Morgan pulled out a nine-overtime decision, 8-4, against the Cardinal's
Dylan Rush.
Sophomore Ryan Mango, ranked No. 15 at 125 pounds, finished off the dual with an 18-8 major decision over Tyler Iwamura. Mango tallied seven takedowns and earned a point for riding time to pick up his first win of the season.
Stanford remains on the road next week as it faces another Pac-10 opponent, the Cal State Fullerton Titans. The squads will meet for a dual on Friday, Nov. 19 at 2:30 p.m. Stanford will then participate in the Fullerton Open on Saturday, Nov. 20.
