Eugene, Ore. -
With the afternoon wrestling complete, and all but the championships and third place matches to be decided, the Stanford wrestling team stands in second place with six wrestlers still alive at the 2008 Pac-10 Championships. Stanford started the day with a bang, winning five of its six consolation semifinal matches to put five wrestlers in third place contests.
Redshirt freshman Lucas Espericueta started the Cardinal off with an upset win over No. 4 Jeremy Doyle of Cal State Bakersfield. The wrestlers had split matches earlier in the year, but Espericueta came through when it counted. In a high-scoring affair, the 149-pounder held on for 10-8 win, ensuring himself no worse than a fourth place finish.
Senior Josh Zupancic followed with a decisive win at 157 pounds, downing Cal State Bakersfield's Trevor Hall with 15-6 major decision. Zupancic, a returning All-American, will look to best Oregon State's unseeded Tim Patrick tonight, and secure a spot in next month's NCAA Championships.
At 165 pounds, freshman Kyle Barrett continued his Cinderella run through the consolation bracket. Barrett, who wrestled in just eight matches and one dual prior to the championships, stunned No. 5 Zack Frazier of Oregon on his home mat. Barrett will get a chance to wrestle Cal State Bakersfield's Daniel Atondo for the third time this season for third place.
In the 174-pound consolation semifinals, junior Luke Feist continued his battle back after being upset in the opening round. Second-seeded Feist pinned his third opponent of the year, putting No. 5 Dale Seley of Portland State on his back in 4:15 to score key bonus points for the Cardinal. Feist will get a rematch with the wrestler who upset him to start the tournament, No. 7 Todd Noel of Cal State Fullerton, in the third place match.
At 184 pounds, sophomore Zack Giesen continued the Stanford run, besting Cal Poly's sixth-seeded Ernie Varela, 7-3. Giesen will look to avenge a one-point loss to Cal State Fullerton's tenth-ranked Ian Murphy in the third place match.
Sophomore Jake Johnson was the only Cardinal wrestler to fall in a consolation semifinal, suffering a 7-3 loss to Boise State's Matt Casperson. Johnson also dropped his fifth place match, falling 8-3 to No. 2 John Drake of Cal State Fullerton to finish sixth.
The Cardinal also was a part of two matches for seventh place. Freshman Porfirio Madrigal won by default to take seventh place at 133 pounds, while heavyweight Phillip Doerner dropped his final career match to Cal Poly's Jim Powers to take eighth place. Doerner finishes his Stanford career with a 30-56 career record, more than doubling his career win total during his senior season.
Action continues tonight at 7 p.m. with the championship bouts and the third place matches. Tanner Gardner will look to become Stanford's first repeat conference champion in more than two decades, while Espericueta, Zupancic, Barrett, Feist and Giesen will look to secure an automatic berth in the NCAA Championships.
