Day One Results

STANFORD, Calif. - Led by Pac-10 champions Moses Delfin (125 pounds), Raphael Davis (197) and Stephen Neal (heavyweight), 11th-ranked Cal State Bakersfield claimed the 1999 Pac-10 Wrestling Championship at Stanford University Sunday. Unranked Boise State, with champions Larry Quisel (157) and Kirk White (165), upset No. 12 Arizona State for second place. The Sun Devils were third and No. 16 Oregon State was fourth. Neal, who won his fourth straight Pac-10 title and ran his win streak to 79 in a row, was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler. Oscar Wood of Oregon State won the award for most pins in the least amount of time, scoring two falls in 1:55 on his way to the title at 149 pounds.

Stanford advanced three wrestlers to the Pac-10 championship match for the first time since 1991, the last time the Pac-10 Championships were on the Farm. Unseeded junior Rudy Ruiz (125 pounds), third-seed junior Zach Zimmerer (133 pounds) and unseeded senior Beau Weiner (157 pounds) qualified for the NCAA Championships with Pac-10 runner-up finishes.

The format for the Pac-10 tournament is single elimination toward the championship match. All competitors who lose before the championship match enter the wrestle-back bracket, however, where they can work their way back to as high as third place. The top four wrestlers in each of the 10 weight classes automatically advance to the NCAA Championships, March 18-20 at Penn State. Three wild cards, chosen from the fifth- and sixth-place finishers in all weight classes, will also advance to the NCAA Championships.
