TEMPE, Ariz. – The Cardinal wrestling team dropped a 24-13 decision at Arizona State, Sunday, in Wells Fargo Arena. The Sun Devils improve to 9-7-0 on the year and 4-2 in the Pac-10, while Stanford drops to 10-8-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the conference.
Stanford started the dual on fire, winning its first four matches. The dual started at 165 pounds, where redshirt sophomore Nick Amuchastegui gave the Cardinal a 4-0 lead with a 10-0 major decision over Kyle DeBerry. Amuchastegui improves to 27-4 on the season and 17-1 in dual matches.
Senior Jake Johnson won his third consecutive match, earning a 5-2 decision over Eric Starks at 174 pounds. Johnson needs just two wins to move into the top-10 in career wins in program history.
The Cardinal kept its momentum as 13th-ranked Zack Giesen shut out his opponent, Jake Meredith, with a 5-0 decision at 184 pounds. Giesen is tied with Amuchastegui for the most wins on the team this season (27).
Freshman Richard Kessler gave Stanford an earl 13-0 lead, posting an 8-2 decision over Michael Hawkins at 197 pounds. However, the lead wouldn’t last for long, as Arizona State won the next six matches to defeat the Cardinal in the team competition.
Stanford now has two weeks to prepare for the Pac-10 championships, hosted by UC Davis, Feb. 26-27, in Davis, Calif.
