CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Stanford wrestling team fell to Oregon State, 35-6, Sunday, at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore. The loss drops the Cardinal to .500 on the season (7-7 overall) and to 2-1 in the Pac-10 Conference. The Beavers improve to 8-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the conference.
Stanford only managed two wins on the day, both coming by decisions for six total team points. Senior Justin Paulsen's 8-4 decision upset 11th-ranked Garrett Drucker at 133 pounds. Paulsen registered two takedowns, two escapes and two near fall points in the upset. Paulsen is now 10-2 on the season and 5-1 in duals.
The Cardinal's other win came at 157 pounds. Redshirt freshman Kyle Meyer posted a 4-2 decision over the Beavers' Alex Elder. Meyer recorded a takedown in the first period and then escapes in the second and third periods to move to 14-8 overall and 6-2 in dual competition.
Both of Stanford's ranked wrestlers fell Sunday in 3-2 decisions. No. 6 Nick Amuchastegui lost to seventh-ranked Colby Covington at 174 pounds, while No. 9 Zack Giesen dropped his first bout of the season to No. 19 Chad Hanke at 197 pounds. Amuchastegui now stands at 22-2 overall and 12-1 in dual competition, while Giesen is 13-1 on the year and 9-1 in duals.
Up next, Stanford travels to Boise, Id., for a conference dual at Boise State. The Cardinal and Broncos will meet on Friday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. MT. Stanford will then return to The Farm for a dual against San Francisco State on Sunday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion.
