Stanford Opens Pac-10 Season with CSUB
Jan. 19, 2006 Stanford, Calif. - Cal State Bakersfield (1-3, 1-1 Pac-10) will be up north this weekend, as Stanford (3-3, 0-0 Pac-10) is set to open conference action with a Friday night dual against the Roadrunners in the Ford Center. The meet is set to begin at 7 p.m. in the gym adjacent to Burnham Pavilion. "Bakersfield is a big match because it's our first conference dual, but also because it's become a rivalry," noted head coach Kerry McCoy. "Every match from now on has an impact on Pac-10 rankings and seedings. This is our next step in helping us establish ourselves as the best team in the conference and in the West."CSUB leads the all-time series against Stanford, 23-2, but the Cardinal is on pace with the Roadrunners this year and is looking for its first win against the southern California team since the 2001-02 season. The Roadrunners are just two spots above Stanford in the conference rankings, and the Cardinal is looking to upend Bakersfield's six wrestlers who are ranked in the top-6 in the Pac-10. Two matches will feature a pair of conference-ranked wrestlers, as second-ranked Anthony Baza (ranked No. 18 in the nation) will face fifth-ranked Josh Zupancic at 149 pounds and fourth-ranked Brian Busby will take on fifth-ranked Ray Blake at 165 pounds. The match will begin at 7 p.m. in the Ford Center. The Cardinal will return to Burnham Pavilion on Monday night when the Cardinal hosts Cal State Fullerton.
