STANFORD, Calif. - The 20th-ranked Stanford wrestling team will compete in two duals this week, starting with a road match at San Francisco State on Friday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. The Cardinal will then play host to Southern Oregon on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. in the San Diego Sports Center in the Ford Center.

The Cardinal (6-5) is coming off a 23-17 Pac-12 win at Cal Poly on Sunday. Stanford is now 3-0 in conference duals. The Cardinal won six of the 10 bouts, scoring bonus points in three of them. Highlighting the dual was senior Nick Amuchastegui's 8-0 major decision win over fourth-ranked and previously undefeated Ryan DesRoches at 174 pounds. Amuchastegui, ranked No. 1 in the nation, improved to 14-0 overall and 11-0 in duals this season. Also scoring bonus points against the Mustang was junior Ryan Mango, ranked No. 8 nationally, with a fall in 1:37 at 133 pounds and sophomore Garrett Schaner, who posted a 10-1 major decision at 157 pounds to win the dual.

Mango leads the team this season with 20 wins (11-0 in duals). He has reached the 20-win plateau for the third straight season and holds a 71-27 career record. He also paces the team with five falls on the year. Sophomore heavyweight Dan Scherer has quietly put together a solid season, ranking second on the squad with 16 wins (9-2 in duals). He is currently riding a three-match winning streak along with junior 184-pounder Spence Patrick.

San Francisco State (3-4) is ranked No. 19 in the Division II top-20. In their last outing, the Gators fell to Cal Poly 25-13 at the Swamp. SFSU is led by junior 165-pounder Isaiah Jimenez (13-4) who is ranked No. 8 in the Division II polls.

 

 

Southern Oregon (6-2) is ranked No. 2 as a team in the NAIA poll. The Raiders have six wrestlers ranked in the top-10 in their respective weight classes in the NAIA rankings. Leading the way is junior Mitchell Lofstedt who is the top-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds. Redshirt freshman Brock Gutches is listed at No. 2 at 174 pounds, while junior Derek Mestrovich (165 pounds) and senior Austin Vanderford (184 pounds) are both listed at No. 3.

Following this week's duals, Stanford will host Pac-12 foe Oregon State on Sunday, Jan. 29. The Cardinal and Beavers will square off at 2 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion.
