ATHERTON, Calif. - Three Cardinal wrestlers recorded falls as Stanford dominated Menlo College, 36-11, Saturday in Atherton, Calif. The Cardinal improves to 4-5 overall on the season.

Stanford won seven of the 10 bouts, including falls by sophomore MikeKent, junior Nick Amuchastegui and redshirt sophomore Timmy Boone.

The dual began at 157 pounds, where Kent gave the Cardinal an early 6-0 advantage with a fall in 4:18 over Mike Lopez. After a scoreless first period, Lopez chose the down position to start the second where Kent was able to capitalize a secure the pin. It was the first fall of the season for Kent, who improved to 11-7 on the season.

Stanford added to its lead as redshirt freshman Kyle Meyer posted a 14-3 major decision over Travis Olsen at 165 pounds. Meyer used four takedowns, three near fall points, two escapes and a point for riding time to pick up his 10th win of the year.

Amuchastegui gave the Cardinal the 16-0 advantage with a fall against Carlos Soto at 174 pounds. The Talent, Ore., native tallied two takedowns in the first period and three near fall points in the second before getting the pin at 4:49. Amuchastegui moves to 19-1 on the season and a perfect 9-0 in dual competition.

True freshman Dan Scherer and senior Zack Giesen put Stanford on top 24-0 halfway through the dual. Scherer used an escape in the second period and picked up a stalling point and riding time in the third to earn the 3-0 decision over Greg Alvarez at 184 pounds. Giesen picked up his first technical fall win of the season with a 16-1 victory over Ali Bannout at 197 pounds. Scherer moves to 9-10 on the season, while Giesen remains undefeated with a 9-0 mark.

Menlo earned wins at heavyweight, 125 pounds and 133 pounds to cut the Cardinal lead to 24-11. However, a win by forfeit for redshirt freshman Jordan Gray at 141 pounds and a fall for Boone at 149 pounds concluded the scoring with Stanford cruising to a 36-11 victory.

 

 

Up next, the Cardinal travels to Dallas to wrestle in the Lone Star Duals on Saturday, Jan. 15 starting at 10 a.m. CT. Stanford will face The Citadel, Brown, Nebraska and Harvard.
