THIS WEEK: The Cardinal hosts the Stanford Duals on Sunday, Jan. 6, welcoming Pac-12 foe Arizona State, Penn and Rutgers to The Farm. Stanford will face the Sun Devils at 2 p.m., the Quakers at 3:45 p.m. and the Scarlet Knights at 5:30 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion. ASU will square-off with Rutgers at 3:45 p.m. and Penn at 5:30 p.m.

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE: Arizona State enters the weekend with a 5-2 overall record and a 1-0 mark in the Pac-12. The Sun Devils are coming off a ninth-place finish at the Southern Scuffle tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn. A young squad, ASU has just two upperclassmen on a roster of 28. The Sun Devils boast four ranked wrestlers with senior 197-pounder Jake Meredith leading the way at No. 8. Senior Levi Cooper (heavyweight) and freshman Blake Stauffer (174 pounds) both come in at No. 14, while sophomore Kevin Radford (184 pounds) is No. 15.

ABOUT PENN: The Quakers are 2-1 overall in duals this season, knocking off No. 21 Leigh (24-12) and Hofstra (21-12). Most recently, Penn finished 25th at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill. Senior 197-pounder Micah Burak is the Quakers highest-ranked wrestler, coming in at No. 7 in the InterMat Rankings. Sophomore C.J. Cobb is listed at No. 12 at 141 pounds.

ABOUT RUTGERS: The Scarlet Knights are 7-1 overall heading into a Jan. 3 dual against Cal State Bakersfield. Rutgers' lone loss came at the hands of nationally ranked Nebraska (22-10) on Dec. 16. Four Scarlet Knight wresters are ranked among the top 20 of the InterMat Polls. Senior 174-pounder Greg Zannetti is the highest-ranked Rutgers wrester at No. 10. Senior Dan Rinaldi comes in at No. 13 at 184 pounds, while senior Trevor Melde (141 pounds) and senior Scott Winston (157 pounds) are both ranked No. 20.

 

 

UP NEXT: Stanford will hit the road next weekend for four duals on the East Coast. The Cardinal will take on Brown, No. 20 Maryland and Harvard on Saturday, Jan. 12 in College Park, Md. Stanford will also wrestle at American on Sunday, Jan. 13 in Washington, D.C.

MIDLANDS RECAP: Seven Stanford wrestlers competed in the 50th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill., while five other wrestled unattached. Senior Ryan Mango, who is redshirting the 2012-13 season, captured the 133-pound title with a 5-0 record. He scored a takedown in the final seconds of the championship match over Iowa's Daniel Dennis to give the Cardinal its first Midlands champion since 2004 (Matt Gentry). Mango is now 15-0 overall during his redshirt season having won three tournament titles.

HEAD COACH Jason Borrelli: Stanford is under the guidance of a fifth-year head coach Jason Borrelli. During his time on The Farm, Borrelli has accrued a 40-40-3 record and sent five wrestlers to the NCAA Championships a total of 12 times. Borrelli, a former Central Michigan standout, first came to The Farm as an assistant coach in 2007 and quickly helped guide the Cardinal to one of its most successful seasons in school history. Since then, Stanford has finished in the Top 20 at the NCAA Championships the past two seasons, including a program-best 11th at the 2011 championships in Philadelphia, Pa.
