No. 12 Lehigh Defeats Stanford, 30-9
STANFORD, Calif. - Lehigh University (3-2) won each of the final six matches to post a 30-9 non-conference win over host Stanford University (0-4) on Monday night at Burnham Pavilion.
In the featured match of the night, Lehigh's John Van Doren (Somerville, NJ/Somerville HS) defeated Stanford's Scott Chapman (Twin Peaks, CA/Rim of the World HS) 6-1 at 177 pounds. Van Doren finished third at the 1996-97 NCAA Championships at 177 pounds, while Chapman finished ninth at 167 pounds. Van Doren improved to 12-1 on the year, while Chapman made his 1997-98 debut after sustaining an elbow injury in October.
The Engineers and Cardinal were tied at 9-9 after four matches, including a second-round pin by the Cardinal's Zach Zimmerer (Billings, MT/Billings Central HS) at 126 pounds. But 12th-ranked Lehigh won the final six matches, five of them by decision and one by forfeit, to pull away.
Stanford returns to action on Wednesday, January 7 when it hosts the University of Pennsylvania at 7 p.m.
