BYU Edges Stanford, 21-15
STANFORD, Calif. - Brigham Young University (3-4) won each of the first four matches, but had to hold on for a 21-15 win over host Stanford University (0-7) on Monday night at Burnham Pavilion. The Cougars locked up the win with a forfeit in the heavyweight division that snapped a 15-15 tie.
BYU took a 15-0 lead through the 142-pound bout thanks to three major decisions. Cougar senior John Kelly (Sandy, UT) defeated Zach Zimmerer (Billings, MT/Billings Central HS) 12-3 at 126-pounds to improve his all-time mark to 2-1 against the Cardinal sophomore.
But Stanford won the next five bouts to tie the match at 15. Cardinal senior Scott Chapman (Twin Peaks, CA/Rim of the World HS), who finished ninth at last year's NCAAs, led the charge with an 8-2 win over Corey Anderson (Loa, UT) at 177 pounds.
Stanford returns to action on Friday at UC Davis at 5 p.m. in its first road dual of the 1997-98 season. BYU, which went 2-2 on its California swing, returns home to face Portland State on Friday at 7 p.m.
