Cal State Bakersfield Defeats Stanford, 21-15
STANFORD, Calif. -- Cal State Bakersfield opened its
1997-98 camapaign with a 21-15 win over host Stanford (0-2) on
Friday night at Burnham Pavilion. The Roadrunners won the final
four matches of the evening to erase a 15-6 deficit.
Stanford won four of the first six matches to take the
nine-point lead. The Cardinal's Warren McPherson (142 pounds;
Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro HS), BJ Sanchez (150; Arvada, CO/Regis
Jesuit HS) and Doug Bardsley (158; Snohomish, WA/Snohomish HS)
all posted convincing wins to help build the early lead.
But the Roadrunners later came back to tie the match thanks to
a 13-7 win by Tito Ortiz (Huntington Beach, CA/Golden West JC)
in the 190-pound match. Bakersfield then clinched the win when
the Cardinal forfeited the heavyweight match.
Stanford returns to action on Tuesday, November 25 when it
hosts NCAA Division II champion San Francisco State at 7 p.m.
