STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team fell to No.12 Central Michigan 30-3, Saturday, in its final home dual of the season at Burnham Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal drops to 6-16 overall, while the Chippewas improve to 14-3.
Redshirt freshman Michael Sojka was the lone Cardinal to earn a win, posting a 4-1 decision over Jackson Lewis at 197 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Sojka chose down and earned a penalty point and an escape to take a 2-0 lead. Jackson cut the lead to 2-1 with an escape in the third period, but Sojka scored a quick takedown to seal the win. He improved to 16-14 overall and 10-11 in duals this season.
The Cardinal came up short in three other bouts against the Chippewas. At 125 pounds, Stanford's Evan Silver was tied with Joe Roth 1-1 late in the third period, but Roth notched a takedown with under 25 seconds remaining and earned riding time for a 4-1 decision.
Both Stanford's Bret Baumbach and Dan Scherer were tied late into the third period in their matches, but gave up takedowns in the final two seconds to fall to 20-10 and 19-10, respectively.
Stanford will now have two weeks to prepare for the Pac-12 Championships, hosted by Arizona State. The Cardinal will travel to Tempe, Ariz., on March 2 for a chance to qualify individuals for the NCAA Championships.
