Two Cardinal wrestlers posted successful runs today at the Boxer Open hosted by Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore. Senior heavyweight Mark Shughart took second place, and redshirt freshman Alex Muller won three consecutive matches to claim third place at 174 pounds.
After dropping his first bout, Muller battled back through the 174-pound consolation bracket to take third place. Muller rattled off three consecutive wins, including a 4-1 decision over Southern Oregon's Andrew Marshall in the third place match, to place in his first collegiate tournament.
Shughart won his first two bouts to reach the heavyweight championship, but was pinned by Southern Oregon's Marcus Moore to take second. Shughart, who is in his first year of collegiate wrestling, also placed for the first time in his career.
True freshmen Blair Matsuura (133 pounds) and Austin Quarles (125 pounds) also competed in the tournament, and got a chance to battle Pac-10 competition.
The Cardinal squad will meet defending Pac-10 Champion Oregon State tomorrow in Corvallis, Ore.
