After a tough dual loss last night, four Cardinal wrestlers placed at today's All Cal Invitational in the Swamp on the campus of San Francisco State. Junior Nathan Peterson (Georgetown, IN/Floyd Central) and sophomore Matt Gentry (Grants Pass, OR/North Valley) each took second place while senior Harold Penson (Richmond Heights, OH/Richmond Heights) captured third and redshirt freshman Larry Ozowara (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Etiwanda) claimed fourth place.
At 125 pounds, Peterson earned a bye in the first round before earning a second round win as his opponent was disqualified. In the semifinal match, Peterson tallied a 10-8 decision over Cal Poly's Joel Mittleman to advance to the finals. Home mat advantage prevailed as Gators' Joey Bareng posted a 5-2 win for the championship.
Gentry took second at 157 pounds with a 2-1 record. He opened the day with a bye in the first round and steamrolled his way into the finals with a 13-5 major decision and a 7-3 decision. Fresno State's Jim Mederios tallied a 12-4 win in the finals for the title, but the two will face each other again as the Bulldogs visit The Farm on Sun., Feb. 16th for the Cardinal's final dual of the season.
Penson one of Stanford's winners last night, tallied a third place finish at 174 pounds. Penson recorded a 5-3 win in his first round match against Dan Schön. Penson dropped to the consolation bracket after a loss in the second round to Cal State Bakersfield's Matthew Montiero, but won his next three bouts including his sixth pin of the season. In the third place match, Penson got revenge by posting a 14-2 major decision over Montiero.
Ozowara posted three wins today as he finished fourth at 197 pounds. With a 13-11 decision, Ozowara advanced to the second round, but faced eventual champion Marcio Botelho. In the consolation bracket, Ozowara posted a 16-9 decision and an overtime 6-4 win before dropping a 5-3 decision to Menlo College's Carter in the third place match.
The Cardinal will close out the dual season in two weeks as UC Davis and Fresno State visit The Farm on Feb 14th and 16th, respectively.
