Corvallis, Ore. -
The Cardinal broke their Pac-10 dual losing streak with an 18-18 tie against the Oregon State Beavers. Four straight match wins in the middle of the dual, including a pin by Scott Loescher, gave Stanford the points necessary for the tie. With a tie and a win in their last two meetings, the Cardinal seems to have finally solved Oregon State's twenty nine years of dominance.
After starting the dual at heavy weight, Nathan Peterson (125) got Stanford on the board with a 4-1 decision. Stanford's freshman middle weights then showed up big once again. At 149 pounds, frosh Josh Zupancic scored a 5-2 decision over Orlando Perez to bring Stanford back to within 12-6. Matt Gentry's now customary decision at 157 pounds (7-4 over Tony Hook) was followed by freshman Scott Loescher's huge pin. He took down Matt Ellis, ranked 14th in the nation, in only 1:52 to give Stanford the lead. Imad Kharbush wrestled to a 9-6 decision over Jeremy Larson, to bump the lead to 18-12.
Stanford's upper weights couldn't close out the win, however, losing two straight decisions to Oregon State. Immediately after the dual, the Cardinal traveled south to Eugene to take on the Oregon Ducks in search of their first Pac-10 dual win.
Notes: Stanford forfeited at 133 pounds when Juston Johnson was not able to wrestle. This was third time in four duals that Stanford gave up six points due to forfeit.
