Bakersfield, Calif. - Stanford (3-9, 1-4 Pac-10) fell to Cal State Bakersfield (4-5, 2-2 Pac-10) this afternoon at the CSUB Icardo Center by a score of 32-12. The Roadrunners started the day with a 33-18 win over Portland State before facing the Cardinal. Sophomore Matt Gentry (Grants Pass, OR/North Valley) captured his tenth dual win of the 2002-03 season and his 21st consecutive dual victory of his career as he dropped Brian Cobb 8-6 today. Senior Harold Penson (Richmond Heights, OH/Richmond Heights) and redshirt freshman Shawn Ritzenthaler (Powell, OH/Kilbourne) also scored wins for Stanford in the loss.

Stanford struggled early as the Pac-10's 2nd-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, Efren Ceballos, scored a 17-7 major decision before the Cardinal forfeited at 133 pounds. The Roadrunners then extended their lead on a 10-3 decision at 141 and a pin at 149 pounds.

At 157, Gentry took an 8-6 decision over Cobb cutting the Roadrunners' lead to 19-3. Gentry has not lost a dual since January 11, 2002 (against Columbia) and has not suffered a dual loss to a Pac-10 opponent since his first conference meet against Oregon in November of 2001.

Cal State Bakersfield's Christian Arellano snuck past Stanford with a 9-8 decision at 165, but Penson rallied at 174 with a late pin against Matt Montiero. Penson has pinned five opponents this season and has now captured 10 wins on the year. The Cardinal's hosts fought back with a major decision and a pin at the next two weights for an insurmountable 32-9 lead heading into the final bout.

At heavyweight, Ritzenthaler took the mat and ended the day with a win for Stanford as he posted an 8-4 decision over Chad Troxler.

Stanford will be back on The Farm this Friday, January 31st for a 5 p.m. dual against Cal Poly before heading to the All Cal Invitational on Saturday, February 1st in San Francisco.
